Jorge Chávez Airport (LIM): official taxis, apps and Miraflores without scams

Jorge Chávez International Airport is in Callao and, since 1 June 2025, has operated from its new terminal, accessed via Av. Morales Duárez (MTC). Pickup and drop-off zones changed from older guides: taxis and ride-hailing apps pick up passengers on the Vía libre lane, only in marked bays, and level 3 is drop-off only (ATU, checked Sep 2026). The official taxi counters are described on the airport website:

The main rule is simple: choose between the official counter and an app, and do not accept “help” from solicitors in the terminal.

Official taxi: the simplest option on arrival

There are taxi counters in domestic and international arrivals. Staff guide passengers to an exclusive area. This option is especially useful if you arrive tired, late at night or with a lot of luggage.

At the counter, agree on the destination and confirm the price before leaving. The most common destinations on the PeruCheap itinerary are Miraflores and Barranco. The material does not set a universal fare for these neighborhoods, so there is no price to invent: confirm it at the official counter when you travel.

Do not accept a ride from someone who approaches you in the terminal offering “help” or saying they are your driver without a confirmed booking. Go to the counter and follow airport guidance.

Apps: Uber, Cabify and inDrive

Uber, Cabify and inDrive operate in Lima. At the airport, passengers must use the designated pickup zone — at the new terminal, the Vía libre lane, only in marked bays (ATU). The app shows the exact point after you request the ride; follow it.

Cabify points riders to parking lot E1: go up to the second floor, cross the boulevard toward the Costa del Sol hotel and walk down the ramp (movilidad.pe, checked Sep 2026). Even so, do not treat it as a permanent map: confirm in the app after requesting the ride.

Before getting in the car:

• check the license plate and model;
• compare them with the app details;
• board only in the indicated zone;
• do not accept offers outside the app;
• share the trip details when possible.

For a first arrival, an app and the official counter are preferable to choosing a street taxi in the terminal.

Airport Express to Miraflores

Airport Express Lima is the airport’s official bus (Lima Airport): it links the terminal with Miraflores, stopping at Larcomar/Marriott, Av. Larco (tourist information center), Parque Kennedy and Hotel Boulevard. Fare: S/20 per person traveling alone or S/15 per person for 2 or more passengers; departures roughly hourly, 7 a.m.–10 p.m. from the airport, with a 50–70 min ride depending on traffic (operator FAQ) (checked Sep 2026).

If you use this option, confirm the stop suitable for your hotel and keep the address saved. For other neighborhoods, confirm the convenience and route in the chosen service.

Money, SIM and the first transfer

There are BCP, Interbank and other network ATMs in arrivals. Airport fees tend to be worse; the practical recommendation is to withdraw only the minimum and leave most of it for the city. At the ATM, decline conversion to your currency and withdraw in PEN / soles. The ATM’s fee is shown on screen before you confirm; check your own bank’s fees in its app.

SIM/eSIM kiosks exist at the airport, but they are usually more expensive than city stores. If you installed an eSIM before the flight, you can postpone buying a physical SIM. For a physical SIM, foreigners can only sign up in person at an operator store or point, with a passport and biometric verification against the Migraciones database (OSIPTEL, checked Sep 2026).

Carry some soles for small expenses, such as water or one taxi ride, but do not carry your entire budget in cash.

Miraflores, Barranco and Downtown: where to stay

Miraflores is a typical first-visit destination and includes the malecón, parks, Larcomar and Huaca Pucllana. Barranco has street art, Puente de los Suspiros and nightlife. San Isidro is described as a business district.

The Historic Center—Plaza Mayor, Cathedral, Palace and San Francisco Convent—is treated in the PeruCheap guide as a daytime itinerary. For most itineraries, the recommendation is to sleep in Miraflores, Barranco or San Isidro rather than turn your arrival into a long walk with luggage.

At night, return by app. Lima has a risk of theft and “motochorro” robberies; do not display your phone in the street, keep the car windows closed and avoid isolated areas. Pickpocketing risk increases at parties and in crowds.

Is it worth renting a car at the airport?

For staying only in Lima, no: traffic and parking make apps a better solution. Renting at LIM makes more sense when you are leaving during the day on the Pan-American Highway toward Paracas or Ica. Do not drive at night outside cities.

For the Lima–Paracas–Ica route, confirm documents, a physical license, credit card and insurance before collecting the vehicle; minimum age and deposit conditions vary by company and are set in the contract. Under the MTC rule, a foreign license is valid only for the first 6 months and only if there is an international agreement with the issuing country — confirm with the rental company. For an urban itinerary, an app or official taxi is the simplest choice.

LIM arrival checklist

• Check the pickup point (Vía libre) at the new terminal in the app and on the signage.
• Choose the official counter or an app before leaving the terminal.
• Do not accept solicitors in the terminal.
• In the app, check the license plate, model and designated zone.
• With a taxi, agree on the price at the counter.
• Withdraw only what is necessary and decline DCC.
• If taking Airport Express: S/20 (1 person) or S/15 per person (2+), departures ~hourly.
• Save your hotel address in Miraflores, Barranco or another neighborhood.
