Cusco travel guide
- Altitude: ~3,400 m
- Suggested stay: 3–5 days (city + surroundings)
Quick answer
- Cusco sits at ~3,400 m: allow 1–2 days to acclimatize and avoid alcohol and exertion for the first 24–48 h; sleeping first in the Sacred Valley (~2,800–2,900 m) is an option.
- Suggested stay: 3–5 days (city + surroundings). Dry months: May–Sep; rain: Nov–Mar.
- The Boleto Turístico (~S/130 for foreigners, 10 days, 16 sites) does not include Machu Picchu, the Cathedral or the main Qorikancha complex.
- Renting a car in the city rarely pays off: walk the center, use apps/taxis and take the train to Machu Picchu.

Car / transport
- Renting in Cusco city / only for the MP circuit: generally NO. Narrow streets, altitude, scarce parking, and no road to Machu Picchu.
- When it makes sense: daytime Sacred Valley loop (Maras–Moray–Chinchero) if you already drive mountains confidently. Pickup: Hertz and others in CUZ/Wanchaq — https://hertzperu.com.pe/
- Docs: passport + physical license ≥1 year; typical min. age 21; credit card hold. Foreign license: per Peru's MTC, it is valid only for the first 6 months of your stay and only if there is a ratified international agreement with the issuing country; after that you must exchange it for a Peruvian license (gob.pe/MTC, 19 Feb 2026, checked Sep 2026). If unsure about your country, carry an International Driving Permit and confirm the rental company's requirement. Detail: How to travel (§11) and How to travel: car rental & festivals.
- Do not drive at night in the mountains.
- Better alternatives: walk the center; Uber/taxi; Valley van/tour; train PeruRail/Inca Rail; Inka Express bus to Puno.
