Budget

• Hostels and guesthouses near Av. Imperio de los Incas / center — plenty of options on booking platforms, but supply changes fast: read recent reviews and check the distance to the station/bus.
• Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu — Known chain in accessible–mid range (also listed as mid on some aggregators).

Mid-range

• El Mapi by Inkaterra — Accessible mid/upscale from the Inkaterra brand.
• Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu — Reliable for 1 night pre/post visit.
• Riverside hotels near the station — prioritize location for the 5–6 a.m. bus.

Upscale

• Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel — Casitas in a cloud-forest garden; spa; luxury reference in town.

Entertainment / nightlife

Not a nightlife destination. The most-cited spot is Mapacho (Av. Imperio de los Incas 614), a riverside craft-beer restaurant with live acoustic music in the evening (mapacho.pe, checked Sep 2026; listed hours 10:00–22:00). Most travelers eat early and sleep for the morning bus. Treat it as a logistics base, not a party town.

Car / transport

• Car to the citadel: impossible (no road; access = train or trek + Consettur bus). Do not rent a car “to go to Machu Picchu.”
• Typical flow: Cusco or Valley → Ollantaytambo (van/taxi/car only to the station) → train → Aguas Calientes → Consettur bus → gate.

Practical tips

1. Tickets only at https://tuboleto.cultura.pe/llaqta_machupicchu — data must match passport.
2. Choose the right circuit (some omit the classic viewpoint).
3. Arrive on time; one-way flow rules.
4. Fog common in rainy season — consider 2 entries/nights if the photo is a priority.
5. Overnight in town = calmer morning at the citadel.
6. Guide: since RM 000334-2026-MC (published 11 Sep 2026), a tour guide is recommended, not mandatory — you need your named ticket and original ID (text of the resolution · Andina, 12 Sep 2026). The rule allows for a TuBoleto update and a 30-day trial period, and some agencies still advertise a “mandatory” guide; a good guide is still worth it.
